A note on the Claremont:

 The only restaurant outside the hotel within a half mile is The Station (see American Short),
about one block down Ashby from the hotel. A bakery, a produce store, and a liquor store (Jackson's--
also claims to sell deli food) are in the same general area. AC Transit bus #65 goes to/from southside
and downtown Berkeley; it stops on Domingo in front of the bakery (fare is 25\(ct).

 Good, medium priced, also an all you can eat lunch (but

 dinner is a nice novelty if you haven't done it recently. Come

 A very nice place to go for a drink, or an after-show
 snack. Quiches are good, salads of uneven quality (avoid the

 Certainly one of the finest restaurants in Northern Cali-
 fornia, with high prices to match. James Beard likes it too.

 dinners, which vary every day...a blend of classical
 french...,original inventions, generally delightfully different. If
 the quality of the meals is not decisively better than some other
 places...the originality can make the difference...wine list not
 too extensive, but presents enough variety for all practical pur-

 Fine northern Italian and French cuisine prepared with
 flair and served with style in a sophisticated but informal at-
 mosphere. Dinner entr \(aa ees include baked squid stuffed with
 mushrooms, poached fillet of salmon, saut \(aa eed fillet of beef
 with herbs, and saut \(aa eed sweetbreads with veal essence.
 Dinner prices range from $7.50 to $9.75 including soup (the
 best in Berkeley) and salad. Wines have been carefully select-
 ed and are reasonable in price. The menu also includes a
 number of interesting and delicious first courses, pastas, and
 desserts. Waiters and waitresses are young, pleasant, courte-
 ous, and highly competent. All in all this is currently my
 favorite European restaurant in Berkeley. \(emGMM

 Unpretentious. Low prices. Try bittersweet chocolate,

 Serves Bud's ice cream, which is produced in San Fran-
 cisco and shipped over. I think it's good, but Leslie doesn't

 Invented Rocky Road ice cream (although Swenson's
 R.R. is better). They make really good frozen yogurt (try the

 Claremont except for Baskin-Robbins. Well-made sundaes,

The Ice Creamery Downstairs at the Student Union

 Prices are as good as Botts; although larger selection,
 servings are smaller. Get dessert here if you are in the area

 plus choice of meats, cheeses. If you are hungry for starch.
 Strangely enough, they also serve pastries, espresso, Italian
 soft drinks, and a variety of nice things. Presumably for the
 evening crowd. The sandwiches would probably ruin your
 palate for 2 hours. \(emRJF π \(bu π The sandwiches can't com-
 pare with East Coast subs, but it's the only place near campus
 that attempts to make them ($1.50)\(emBWC π \(bu π Ignore the
 other disparaging remarks\(emthe sandwiches are good and rea-
 sonably priced. Their desserts are made across the bay at Just
 Desserts, a deli that sells only that. Try the carrot cake (or the
 baklava, or their black bottom cupcakes, or the banana
 bread, or the frozen yogurt ......)\(emBE π \(bu π What BWC
 doesn't know is that it is an East Coast franchise. Blimps,

 soup and other cooked dishes are very good ($1-3). Crowded

 usually more interesting. Across the hall from the Pacific Film

 shrimp scatter. Go in a group so you can avoid the wait.
 Waiters will sing happy birthday to you at the drop of a hat
 (birthday hat?) \(emRJF π \(bu π Dinner reservations for parties
 of 6 or more only. Otherwise prepare for a 1.5+ hour wait in
 the bar or Brennan's down the street, if you come during
 prime time (5-8pm). Inexpensive ($3-5) but better than
 okay.\(emBWC π \(bu π Avoid this dump at all costs. In 4 years I
 have never had a decent meal here. Go to Brennan's instead
 (their food isn't all that great, either, but they've got a superb
